Singapore Sling !

We travelled to Singapore on a brief stopover with our 8 year old Kidsetter in tow.

We stayed at the Swissotel the Stamford, one of the tallest hotels in Southeast Asia.

After checking in we caught up with some great friends for a meal in the Chijmes district.  Chijmes is a national monument awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.  Boasting more than just a rich heritage and stunning architecture, Chijmes is an exciting gastro-entertainment destination for the discerning patron.

Stepping into the grounds of Chijmes was like entering an oasis of calm. Within this oasis is El Mero Mero which is a delicious Mexican restaurant.  Seated in the patio area of the restaurant made for great viewing of the former chapel and other heritage buildings.  It began raining and our Kidsetter enjoyed playing and jumping on the lawn’s bean bags.

We love the view of Singapore from our hotel bar called ‘Skai Bar’. Unfortunately, we slept through the Chinese NY fireworks so we’ll just have to come back !

The following day before we returned to the airport we headed to visit the Singapore icon – Raffles which opened in 1887.

It is one of the few remaining great 19th century hotels in the world.  We had our photo taken with the infamous ‘Narajan Singh’ – a Sikh doorman of Raffles Hotel whom has become the brand ambassador of the grand old institution.

Our Kidsetter learnt about the significance of the Tiger at Raffles.  An unfortunate event that took place whereby a tiger was shot dead under the billiards room at Raffles Hotel on 13 August 1902.

We took a breather and enjoyed a tea in the Raffles Courtyard, an elegant alfresco bar and lounge.  Our Kidsetter used the time to write in his Lonely Planet Travel Journal.

After a whirlwind visit to Singapore, it was time to return to the Jewel Changi Airport.  Upon entering the airport our Kidsetter spotted the robotic Auxiliary Police Officer.  They maintain law and order by protecting property and personnel from potential threats and terrorist activity.  They also perform access control, conduct security screenings, provide patrolling and guarding services, as well as manage incidents and emergencies.  Incredible !

The airport has changed greatly since we were last there featuring the HSBC Rain Vortex.  The world’s tallest indoor waterfall and the nucleus of the Jewel.  Flowing 40 metres down to the basement.  Our Kidsetter was in awe !  We ran out of time to visit level 5 and experience the Canopy Park and all the fun activities, we’ve left something for when we return.

We thoroughly enjoy Singapore as a family destination.  The people are relaxed and welcoming.  Sites are easily accessible via public transport, taxi or foot.  There is plentiful to do, see and explore for all ages.
