We are big advocates of educating Kidsetters through travel. Now that COVID-19 restrictions had eased, we were able to bring some post-European Australian history to life for our 9-year-old Kidsetter and drove to Glenrowan. Glenrowan is a 2.5 hour drive from Melbourne.
The tiny village of Glenrowan was the scene of the Kelly Gang’s last stand against police. Ned Kelly was shot and captured here in June 1880. Their story is preserved in the townships attractions, museums and historic walks. You can easily explore the town on foot even with a puppy !
It was quite extraordinary to walk in the footsteps of the iconic Ned Kelly.
The Kelly Gang forced men to tear up the railway track and then escorted them to the Ann Jones Glenrowan Inn where he detained the patrons and waited for the police to arrive.
Standing at the Ann Jones Glenrowan Inn site I couldn’t help but imagine the Kelly gang dancing, drinking and playing games whilst they waited for their inevitable fate.
Women and children were held at the stationmaster’s house and later joined the menfolk. More than 60 people were crammed inside the small Inn, about 40 were still there when the battle began. 3 hostages were caught in the crossfire. Eventually the hostages were released, but the siege continued. Finally, the police decided on a last, decisive act. The Inn was set alight to flush out the last of the Kelly gang.
Ned taunted police by tapping on his breastplate with his gun. Ned had only one good hand and could barely reload his revolver due to the weight of his armour. Yet he continued to challenge the 30 police who were positioned around the Inn.
The siege of the colony’s most wanted men lasted for 12 hours.
We visited the Ned Kelly Museum & Kelly Homestead which was a replica of their ramshackle hut and features a fabulous collection of Ned Kelly history.
We are huge fans of theatre and happened to walk past a venue with fun music enticing us to venture in to learn more. Ned Kelly’s Last Stand Animated Theatre is a unique tourist attraction.
Through the brilliance of animatronics and live special effects, we were transported back in time to witness the events that led up to the capture of the Kelly Gang. The 40-minute show is educational, historically correct and entertaining.
Glenrowan is a fascinating country town, abound with historic folk hero status. A great way to immerse Kidsetters alike in post-European Australian history.
