Kiriwina Island

Kiriwina Island is a beautiful island located in Papua New Guinea.  Beautiful beaches, white sand and light blue waters.  The people are friendly and primitive.  I was thrilled our Kidsetter was experiencing a community such as this.  We travel a lot and I have to say the last time I experienced this degree of primitiveness was 12 years ago.  A truly unique experience in today’s modern world.

We set up beside the beachside and swam in the ocean.  Plenty of broken coral along the beach; be sure to pack reef shoes for your Kidsetter.  Don’t forget the Deet roll-on too; not that many insects but some are large in size.

After a swim in the ocean we rode on one of the Kiriwina tribes canoes made from blackwood.  I’m not sure what I was thinking as the waters are very shallow and I had assumed we would be given the ores to paddle ourselves.  Half way through our ride I realised the person we’d hired the canoe from was going to physically push both myself and Kidsetter around in the canoe the entire time !  I kept thinking of this boy’s back !  It was enjoyable but ask them for the ores before you board the canoe.

We walked along the market and found a school were the children were dressed in their tribal clothing doing what they love to do – dance !  Our Kidsetter was in awe of their display of colourful wears.

We continued walking along a dusty road passing many locals carrying all type of objects on their heads.  Naturally our Kidsetter asked why did they carry belongings on their heads and how did they not fall off ?

We eventually reached a nearby small village and were met by more dancing children and others just hanging by their houses along with an 80-year-old man resting with his pet pig.  Their houses are basic huts on stilts that are well kept.

No doubt you can imagine the questions being asked from our Kidsetter and his little brain working in overdrive processing all that he saw and experienced.  An unforgettable adventure !
