We travelled to Îlot Maître with our 4-year-old Kidsetter in tow. The l’îlot Maître is an island in the archipelago of New Caledonia. Settled by both Britain and France during the first half of the 19th century, the island became a French possession in 1853. New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean since 1956.
Îlot Maître floats like a mirage on the turquoise lagoon. At the heart of a unique marine reserve of 200 hectares. Secluded from the hustle and bustle of central Nouméa and is reached by a 20-minute boat ride from Anse Vata.
The island is rich with animal life and is home to unusual creatures such as the crested gecko. The lush island has an abundant of vegetation, dense interior jungles, fertile soils, breath-taking reefs and corals.
New Caledonia has a semi-tropical climate, which is modified by southeast trade winds. January and February months are hot and humid. The islands are subject to tropical cyclones, most frequent from November to March. Thankfully we didn’t experience a tropical cyclone !
The setting is idyllic for snorkelling and equipment can easily be hired. Other water activities are available such as stand-up paddling, kayaks and motorised water sports such as jet skis and boat tours.
What Kidsetter doesn’t love the water? Ours too. We spent most of our time in L’escapade Îlot Maître swimming pool. Our Kidsetter enjoyed the novelty of being able to swim up to the pool bar and order the ever-popular coconut with its top sliced off and a straw to drink its fresh milk.
Kidsetters will love the laid-back vibe of Îlot Maître , with not a care in the world. Swimming in pristine waters, eating delicious fresh foods, having fun with friends and family – what else is there in life ?
