We were fortunate enough to be in The Netherlands during the Tulip season. The infamous Keukenhof is only open for a few months of the year. Also known as the Garden of Europe, is one of the world’s largest flower gardens, situated in Lisse, South Holland, Netherlands.
We boarded a coach bus with from Amsterdam with our 13 month old Kidsetter. A relaxing 40 minute trip admiring the scenery.
Arriving at Keukenhof simply took my breath away. I’d never seen gardens such as these. We felt like we’d walked into an Enid Blyton novel and Mr Moonface was going to appear in the enchanted forest. Truly spectacular !
Approximately 7 million flower bulbs are planted annually in the park, which covers an area of 32 hectares. The history of Keukenhof dates back to the 15th century. Countess Jacoba van Beieren [Jacqueline of Bavaria] (1401-1436) gathered fruit and vegetables from the Keukenduin [kitchen dunes] for the kitchen of Teylingen Castle. Keukenhof Castle was built in 1641 and the estate grew to encompass an area of over 200 hectares.
In 1949 a group of 20 leading flower bulb growers and exporters came up with the plan to use the estate to exhibit spring-flowering bulbs, signalling the birth of Keukenhof as a spring park. The park opened its gates to the public in 1950 and was an instant success, with 236,000 visitors in the first year alone. Keukenhof has developed into a world-famous attraction.
These picturesque gardens are the perfect location to pack a picnic. A picnic meadow and various benches throughout the park where you can sit down to eat and immerse yourself in these surroundings. Kidsetters can take a break from looking at flowers as there are various other activities for them; a giant playground, petting farm, and maze create a fun filled day for all.
Add to the experience and take a whisper boat through the stream viewing the bulb fields from the water. The boat trip takes 45 minutes.
Even at 13 months old, our Kidsetter relished in the setting. Mesmerized by the volumes of flowers and vibrant colours. Undoubtedly the beauty of this fairyland has left it’s mark in our Kidsetter’s developing brain.
Keukenhof is a magical experience for all ages.
