After an incredible holiday around the Caribbean we flew into Miami International Airport. We hired a car and drove down to Florida Keys. On our way we stopped at the infamous Biltmore Hotel.
The Biltmore Hotel has long been a symbol of elegance and sophistication.
Its Mediterranean architecture and spectacular landscapes are unsurpassed in South Florida.
After a 4 hour drive, we reached our stunning Coral Lagoon Resort in Marathon.
Our 8-year-old Kidsetter had a ball sliding up and down the carpeted stairs.
Nestled in the middle of Florida Keys, an hour’s drive from Key West, Marathon is a 10-mile-long, family-friendly community made up of 13 islands that include Grassy Key, Fat Deer Key, and Vaca Key.
With a rich maritime history, 1,200 wet slips, and 1,200 dry slips, Marathon is a boating and sailing paradise, drawing visitors from all over the globe to its calm, turquoise waters.
The following day we drove 1 hour down to Key West to explore the southernmost point of the US and the westernmost island of the Florida Keys.
The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.
Key West has always been an alluring favourite to visitors like John James Audubon, Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and Harry Truman.
Key West is also known as “Conch Republic”. Deriving from the Queen Conch, a large sea snail that lives in the Keys’ waters. The people born in Key West have been called “Conchs” for a long time.
Roosters rule the roost (haha) in Key West as they were prized for back-alley cockfighting. Thankfully, they were released after the practice was made illegal in the 70’s and they are free to roam as the please.
We enjoyed meandering through the colourful streets and vibrant shops.
We visited the infamous Green Parrot Bar for a meal and refreshing drink. The bars origins date back to 1890. Our Kidsetter was fascinated by all the various memorabilia hanging from the roof.
We had been travelling around the Caribbean with a group of friends to celebrate a significant birthday. The time had come to say farewell and fly to our next destination, Qatar.
