Festive Helsinki

We travelled to Helsinki with our 5-year-old Kidsetter in tow.  We were headed further north to see Santa and his elves in Rovaniemi, however we had to journey through Helsinki.  Not one to miss an opportunity, we thought we’d explore this beautiful city at Christmas time.  We checked into our splendid hotel – Hotel Lilla Roberts.  An art deco décor with a quirky twist.  Uncovering a touch of curious yet fun adornment at every turn.

Helsinki is Finland’s southern capital, sitting on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland.  Helsinki is a modern, pocket-sized European city known for design and high technology. Helsinki’s attractive and unique character comes from its proximity to the sea, as well as its location between the East and the West.

Meandering the streets of Helsinki we discovered the stunning Christmas lights on the city’s main street Aleksanterinkatu, the delightful window displays and the bustle of shoppers in Helsinki Christmas Market exuding a cheerful warmth.

The Christmas Market located at the Senate Square is the heart of the Christmas experience in Helsinki.  Creating an appropriately festive ambiance, the Market has around 140 vendors in wooden huts offering gifts for all, including handicrafts, design items and delicious edibles. The nearby restaurants offered great food and hot beverages. Not to mention the infamous Glogi, a traditional Christmas drink, made from spiced wine with a sprinkling of almonds and raisins.  Yum !

Next we felt compelled to investigate the awe-inspiring Helsinki Cathedral.  Completed in 1852, this neoclassical style building has been imposing its beauty over the Senate Square of Helsinki.  A distinctive landmark in the cityscape, with its tall, green dome surrounded by four smaller domes. We enjoyed a Christmas service whilst we visited.

Our Kidsetter had his eye on riding a charming old carousel in the centre of the market.  We enjoyed several rides on the traditional carousel riding wooden horses.  Our Kidsetter could not contain his euphoria, laughing so hard his belly hurt !  It was certainly the highlight for our Kidsetter.

Soaking up the ambiance of the Christmas Market in the unique setting in Senate Square, in the shadow of the white cathedral and around the statue of Emperor Alexander II, is part of its spell.
