We travelled to Colmar with our 5-year-old Kidsetter. Colmar is a medieval town situated in France near the Germany border. Hiring a 2-bedroom apartment in the town’s centre ensured we would be close to all the Christmas festivities. Colmar is renowned for being the ‘Magic of Lights’ at Christmas.
The cobbled streets, lined with colourful half-timbered houses, are brought to life by a breathtaking winter scene. With it’s beautiful lights, the old town becomes an idyllic setting enhanced with Alsatian Christmas traditions.
An illuminated pathway led us through the streets to the canal revealing a marvellous sight ! Children were singing Christmas carols on charming, sparkling boats. An authentic spectacle of harmonious voices interpreting beautiful traditional Christmas carols. A pinch yourself moment!
We discovered the 5 traditional Christmas markets, each constituting a mini village with it’s world of passionate craftspeople. We admired the many creations of local artisans; ceramists, potters, glassmakers, cabinetmakers, wood carvers, hatters, jewellers and other creators. Our Kidsetter had his eye on many of the original toys.
Meandering along the picturesque streets, our Kidsetter was intrigued by a street performer posing as a ‘Charlie Chaplain’ living statue. What a surprise our Kidsetter received when the statue moved after he put coins in the performers collection box!
We were exploring the majestic medieval Koifhus building when our Kidsetter discovered a tiny amount of snow on the ground. Fun was had, laughing whilst throwing miniature snowballs at each other.
Colmar, Little Venice, which, at Christmas, becomes a true paradise for Kidsetters. Guided by the astonishment of our Kidsetter, who was amazed seeing rabbits or sheep in a wooden chalet before pausing to admire the mechanical crib. It was difficult for him to leave this market without following a charming routine: drinking a hot apple juice, riding the horses on the merry-go-round and posting his letter to Santa Claus in the giant letter box.
In the heart of the capital, the Christmas wine cellars were especially decorated for the occasion. We met the region’s wine producers to discover, the great Alsatian white wines, and sampled delicious products from the Alsatian region.
It’s magical decoration and warm atmosphere give Colmar a unique and wonderful ambiance, offering spectacular moments and memories for all Kidsetters.
