We travelled to Aruba with our 8-year-old Kidsetter in tow. The island does not have major cities however is divided into six districts. Most of the island’s population resides in or around the two major city-like districts of Oranjestad (the capital) and San Nicolaas.
We were based in Oranjestad and caught a taxi to one of the most famous beaches in the world – Eagle beach !
This pristine long stretch of beach with soft white sands and aqua blue waters features a variety of water sports and some palapas.
Eagle Beach is home to two of the most photographed and renowned fofoti (divi) trees in Aruba, with its trademark silhouette pointing in the direction of the Caribbean and is known to be a favorite nestling sport for sea turtles.
We were quick to make a bee line for an available palapa and hire some beach chairs. Next it was time to experience this incredible turquoise water.
Our Kidsetter enjoyed practicing swimming and spotting various kinds of small fish. Extra special visitors decided to make an appearance – pelicans ! They were hovering above spying their next meal and would give us quite a shock as they would dive down right beside us to collect their fish.
We had worked up an appetite; perhaps watching the pelicans have their lunch didn’t help. We had heard about the infamous Big Mama Grill in the southern part of Aruba. We caught a taxi from Eagle Beach and made our way to a remote location surrounded by desolate fields of cacti and found the infamous Big Mama Grill in San Nicolas. A fun Flintstones themed beach side restaurant and bar featuring local seafood, American Barbeque and Burgers. Yabba Dabba Doo !
After lunch it was time to swim. Baby Beach is a true Caribbean beach paradise. This gorgeous half-moon sandy expanse in a calm lagoon is ideal for families with small Kidsetters.
The shallow waters make it a prime beach destination for Kidsetters alike who like to wade out for a long distance and still touch the sea bottom.
Our Kidsetter enjoyed snorkelling and spotting some of the Baby Beach marine life in the lagoon. Marine life range included barracuda, squid, parrot fish, blowfish, angelfish, eels, and many other small fish.
After soaking up as many fun hours in the sun as we could muster, it was time to leave the of white sandy beaches and start it all again tomorrow…
